The Canadian Consulate General in New York is one of ten Canadian Consulates General in the United States. The Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. is responsible for our overall bilateral relationship with the United States. The Consulates are responsible for specific areas in the U.S. The New York office covers the eastern part of New York State and the states of Connecticut and New Jersey.

These posts were originally established to assist Canadian exporters in developing markets in the United States and to provide consular assistance to Canadians in the U.S. Over time these interests have expanded to include, among other things, the job of explaining Canadian policies, the dissemination of information on Canada and, at some posts, visa issuance to immigrants or to travellers from third countries.

The effective management of relations with the United States and its institutions has always been a central goal of Canadian foreign policy. While Canada is perhaps the least "foreign" of all foreign countries, many important differences do exist. The Canadian Consulate General is here to promote constructive understanding of the Canada/USA relationship, including those differences.

The Consular Section, A full range of consular services is provided through the Consulate General to Canadian citizens residing or travelling in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Bermuda. These include passport and citizenship information, registration for federal elections, notarial services (birth, marriage, death, etc..) and providing emergency assistance in the case of disasters, accidents, arrest and detention or medical emergencies.
