Application Process

How do you apply for funding?

To apply for these awards, use:

  • Form 200, Application for an NSERC Scholarship or Fellowship; or
  • Form 202, Application for an Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA).

Deadlines

Depending on the type of award you are seeking, there are a number of deadlines to keep in mind when you apply for support from NSERC.

NSERC must receive your application by the specified deadline. If your application is postmarked before the deadline but NSERC receives it after the deadline, NSERC will still consider it late and reject it. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, NSERC must receive your application by the next working day. For certain programs, universities also have internal deadlines that you must meet well in advance of any NSERC deadline. For more information about these internal deadlines, contact the scholarship liaison officer at your university.

Do you have a question about your application?

If you have a question or would like more information on your application, please contact:

Scholarships and Fellowships Division

E-mail: schol@nserc.ca

Can you appeal a decision?

NSERC will consider reversing a decision only if there is compelling evidence of administrative error or discrimination in the review process. Appeals can be based only on information available in the application. NSERC must receive your appeal within two months of the date you received your notification of decision.

Privacy issues

NSERC protects the information and material that it receives from you. For information on privacy and confidentiality issues, see the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act (ATIP).

Who owns the rights to intellectual property from research?

NSERC does not retain or claim any ownership of, or exploitation rights to, the intellectual property resulting from your NSERC funding. However, since NSERC's role includes promoting the use of knowledge to build a strong national economy and improving the quality of life of Canadians, every effort should be made to have the results of NSERC-funded research exploited in Canada, for the benefit of Canadians. You are encouraged to discuss intellectual property rights with all parties and organizations involved in the research.
