A written request signed by the President/Principal, or delegate.

A brief overview of the institution including the programs offered, the areas of research, and the number of students and faculty.

Letters from the Deans of Graduate Studies of three or more NSERC-eligible Canadian universities affirming that your institution’s degrees are acceptable for direct admission into their own postgraduate programs without the necessity of a period of qualifying study.

A statement affirming the institution’s commitment to research, accompanied by supporting documents such as section(s) of the mission statement, the institution’s policy on research, etc.

A statement affirming that the institution will provide basic facilities and services, including space, to allow its faculty to conduct research. Please include a brief description of these facilities and services and the general terms for their use and availability.

A statement affirming that the institution will absorb the indirect costs of research undertaken through NSERC grants. Please provide a statement on the current situation, if relevant, indicating that the institution understands and abides by the policies and regulations described in the Responsibilities and Accountability in the Financial Administration section of the Program Guide for Professors on the NSERC Web site.

A statement affirming that the institution will sign and adhere to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Roles and Responsibilities in the Management of Federal Grants and Awards (MOU).

A completed Federal Agencies’ Grant and Award Management questionnaire.

A copy of the institution’s policy on integrity in research and scholarships, including the procedures for handling allegations of misconduct.

A copy of the institution’s policy on the ethics review of research involving humans that meets the standards of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS) as the minimum standard. Please include the ethics review procedures and all forms related to ethics reviews.

Note: If your institution has arranged for a Research Ethics Board (REB) of another eligible Canadian institution to review your institution’s cases or to serve as your institution’s appeal board, please include:

a statement affirming that research involving humans is not conducted within your institution’s jurisdiction or by its members and that, if this situation changes:

A statement indicating which option (described in Article 5.3 of the Use of Animals in Research section of the MOU) applies to the institution. If option 1 applies, please include:

A statement affirming that the institution agrees to abide by the policies on research involving biohazards, radioactive materials, research in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, etc., as detailed in the Requirements for Certain Types of Research in the Program Guide for Professors on NSERC’s Web site; and

A statement affirming that the institution has effective safeguards in place to protect the sensitive information entrusted to it by NSERC for administering applications and awards; agrees to abide by the NSERC data protection requirements set out in the MOU; and will sign and return one signed copy of the MOU to NSERC once the institution is recognized as eligible.
