OCRI High School IT Award

Award:
High School IT Entrepreneur(s) of the Year

This award will be presented to a student/group of students involved in IT related activities that are entrepreneurial in nature. Entrepreneurs are risk takers who perceive opportunities and create an organization to pursue it. Entrepreneurs identify a need for a product or service, develop a business or venture plan to provide for that need, and create a venture to provide that product or service.


Scholarships

On behalf of the Community Foundation of Ottawa, OCRI administers a variety of scholarship programs established in the region. The scholarships, which are awarded annually, are available to graduating high school students in the Ottawa region. These include:

The Elizabeth Heath Awards (for technical, trades training and development)

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $1,000 (per award)
Number of awards available: 2
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a student graduating from the apprenticeship Co-operative Education Studies (ACES) program (or similar program) at a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • pursuing further education or training in apprenticeship or skilled employment program
  • must demonstrate a need of financial assistance
  • must have demonstrated diligence and determination both “on the job” and at school

The award is to be used for trade/employment tools and equipment and/or for further education/training.

The Hill Charity Awards

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $2,000 (per award)
Number of Awards available: 3
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a graduating student from a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • must have applied to a recognized college or university
  • entering a full-time program (from September 2006 to April 2007)
  • demonstrates a history of active community involvement
  • demonstrates both financial need and academic achievement

Barbara Ingram, Janet W. McCarthy and W.J.P. Jack Robertson Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $2,000 (renewable for up to 3 years)
Number of Awards available: 1
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a graduating student from a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • must have applied to a recognized college or university
  • entering a full-time program (from September 2006 to April 2007)
  • special consideration will be given to students demonstrating financial need
  • person with a physical disability

Kildonan Education Awards

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $3,000 (per award)
Number of Awards available: 3
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a graduating student from a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • must have applied to a recognized college or university
  • entering a full-time program (from September 2006 to April 2007)
  • demonstrates both financial need and academic achievement

The Lord Dundonald Chapter (IODE) Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $400
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a graduating student from a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • must have applied to a recognized college or university
  • entering a full-time program (from September 2006 to April 2007)
  • demonstrates both financial need and academic achievement

Jack Meadows Memorial Awards

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $2,500 (if attending college)
$3,000 (if attending university)
Number of Awards available: 8 (in total)
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a graduating student from a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • must have applied to a recognized college or university
  • entering a full-time program (from September 2006 to April 2007)
  • demonstrates both financial need and academic achievement

New Sun Award

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $500
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

Ottawa Association for the Blind Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $800
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • a graduating student from a high school in the region of Ottawa
  • must have applied to a recognized college or university
  • entering a full-time program (from September 2006 to April 2007)
  • legally blind

Drew Shouldice Memorial Award (OCDSB only)

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $1,000 (per award)
Number of Awards available: 2
Application

Application must demonstrate all selection criteria:

  • graduating student from a high school in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board
  • pursuing education at a recognized university
  • financial need
  • student was employed during high school years
  • student will have made a contribution to school and/or community in one or more areas of athletics, volunteer work, the arts, student government or other similar activities
  • student must be a person of character and integrity
  • at the graduation ceremony, the recipient of the Drew Shouldice Memorial Award will receive no more than one other award

Black Canadian Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2006
Award: $5,000 (non-renewable)
Application

Application must satisfy all selection criteria:

  • Black Canadian Student graduating from a high school in the Region of Ottawa-Carleton;
  • pursuing education at a recognized Canadian university;
  • must demonstrate a need of financial assistance.

How to Apply for Regional Scholarships

All applications should be sent to the Guidance Office and then they will be directed to the school board in which the student is attending classes, unless otherwise specified.

Application forms are also available for the scholarships at your school Guidance Office, the following items are suggested to be included in the application package:

Letter written by you, to the selection committee, describing how you suit the selection criteria for the scholarship you have chosen to apply for. (e.g. your academic achievements, your school and community involvement, extra curricular activities, education plans, etc.)

Letter of reference from a teacher/guidance counselor, principal or someone who knows you and your community involvement (not a relative)

Copy of the latest marks available

Any other information necessary to support the selection criteria for the individual awards.
