Summary of Changes – Program Guide for Students and Fellows 2006

NSERC has revised the Program Guide for Students and Fellows for 2006. A summary of the most significant changes appears below. Note: Some information is not new, but has been clarified/incorporated into the instructions/program descriptions; these items are indicated with an asterisk*.

This summary is meant only to help you focus on the main changes. Since this document is not comprehensive, you are strongly advised to read the program descriptions that are relevant to you and the appropriate instructions.

 USRA
Industrial USRA
  • Students are eligible to apply if their last term is part-time (as long as they were registered full-time throughout their program).*
  • Major rewrite of the following sections:
    • How do you apply?
    • Student final report
    • Payments to companies
  • Travel reimbursements may be taxable.*
  • Students must be supervised by full-time employees of the company, preferably by research staff.
USRA
  • Students are eligible to apply if their last term is part-time (as long as they were registered full-time throughout their program).*
  • Research staff with grant extensions are eligible to supervise.*
  • Travel reimbursements may be taxable.*
 SUPPLEMENTS – UNDERGRADUATE
Environment Canada Atmospheric Science Undergraduate Supplements
  • The program name was changed from Meteorological Service of Canada Undergraduate Supplements.
 SUPPLEMENTS – POSTGRADUATE
Scholarship supplements
  • The following supplements no longer exist:
    • British Chevening /Athlone-Vanier Engineering Fellowship Supplement
    • Canadian Space Agency Postgraduate Scholarship Supplements in Space Technology (Supplements in Space Science are still offered.)
Environment Canada Atmospheric Science Graduate Supplements
  • The program name was changed from Meteorological Service of Canada Graduate Supplements.
Canadian Poultry Research Council (CPRC) Postgraduate Scholarship Supplement
iCore Graduate Scholarship Supplements iCore will supplement an NSERC PGS D for up to three years (previously two years).*
Gordon M. MacNabb Scholarship Foundation Supplements The Foundation will contact successful applicants and inform them of the results by May 10.
Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network Postgraduate Scholarship Holders of Canada Graduate Scholarships are also eligible to apply for these supplements.*
Canadian L’Oréal-Unesco For Women in Science Postgraduate Scholarship Supplements
  • Applicants must obtain the support of their supervisors.
  • The section “How do you apply” has changed.
 SUPPLEMENTS – POSTDOCTORAL
Scholarship supplements The following supplements no longer exist:
  • Canadian Space Agency Postdoctoral Fellowship Supplements in Space Technology (Supplements in Space Science are still offered.)
 PGS/CGS
CGS & PGS – Canada Graduate Scholarships and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships
  • Students entering their doctoral program directly from their bachelor’s degree are responsible for choosing the type of the award they want (if they are eligible for both the PGS M or PGS D).
  • Students who apply directly to NSERC:
    • The new deadline is October 15.
    • Students who apply directly to NSERC when they are required to apply through a Canadian university will see their applications declared ineligible and rejected. (Please refer to the revised table “Registration Status at time of application” in the section entitled “How do you apply for a scholarship”.)*
  • Brief descriptions of the Julie Payette Scholarship and the NSERC André Hamer Postgraduate Prizes are included.*
 IPS
Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship
  • “Are you eligible for scholarship support?” section: applicants are not eligible to receive scholarship support while in their qualifying year of study.*
  • “Which companies are eligible to participate?” section: some examples of eligible organizations are given.
  • “How do you apply?” section: there is an additional sub-bullet under the eighth bullet.
  • “Notification of decision” section: nominations which are not complete four months after the proposed start date of the award may be rejected by NSERC.
NSERC/MITACS Scholarship This new award combines features of the NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) and the MITACS Internship Program.
 PDF
Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF)
  • PDFs are not only expected to change department but supervisor as well.
  • The Howard Alper Postdoctoral Prize is described.*
 IRDF
Industrial R&D Fellowships
  • The average annual salary offered to successful applicants last year was approximately $52,000 (as compared with $51,000 the previous year).
  • The nomination must include: Proof of completion of Ph.D. (if completed at time of nomination) instead of official up-to-date transcripts of all your graduate academic records as was previously the case.
  • The reviewer’s evaluation should also include the match between the applicant’s background and the proposed research project.
  • More details are provided on time spent on technology transfer activities.
 INTERNSHIP
Northern Research Internship
  • Location of permafrost limit redefined.*
  • The entire value of the award, including the travel and logistics allowance, may be taxable.*
  • To determine the effectiveness of the Northern Research Internship program, a final report is required. Details of what the report should include are found in the program description.*
 POLICIES
Eligibility Criteria
  • If you hold or have held a CGS from another federal granting agency (CIHR or SSHRC) you are not eligible to apply to NSERC for support at the same level.*
  • Proposed research in psychology – new areas in which some eligibility conditions apply include:
    • Environmental management
    • Forensic science
    • Speech pathology
  • Text has been clarified and now reads: “In cases where the proposed research is deemed to fall within the mandate of either CIHR or SSHRC, NSERC will not accept the application.”*

  • This document was deleted as the contents now appear in the appropriate program descriptions.

  • Addresses section: give an end date if address of the applicant is temporary; otherwise all correspondence to be sent to initial address
  • Justification for Location of Tenure section: Removed the possibility for PDFs to send a copy of their acceptance letter at proposed location
  • Contributions and Statement section:
    • Part I Contributions to research and development section: a bullet has been added for conferences.
    • Part III: PGS M applicants may append only an additional 1/3 page to describe special circumstances.
  • Appendix 1: If reviewer for a PDF returns Appendix 1 to you, forward it to NSERC and not to the head of the university department as in the past.
  • Appendix 2: is no longer needed to evaluate PDF applicants therefore text adjusted accordingly in the instructions.
Form 202 – Undergraduate Student Research Award – Part II
  • The upper portion of the form has been redesigned.
  • Now asking for the e-mail of the company contact
Form 202 Instructions
  • Many clarifications throughout the instructions
  • New section: “What does my signature on the application mean?”
  • Companies may use a shorter process to determine the eligibility to host a proposed USRA. More information is now available directly in the instructions.
