Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF)

Tips for potential applicants: How do I find a company to nominate me for an IRDF?

There are a number of ways to find a sponsoring company:

  1. NSERC has already approved hundreds of companies to participate in our industrial scholarship and fellowship programs. You will find a list at http://www.nserc.gc.ca/sf_e.asp?nav=sfnav&lbi=comp_elig#company_elig. Some of the companies listed have also provided a list of the broad areas in which much of their research is focused.
  2. Talk to your Ph.D./postdoctoral supervisor and other faculty members in your department. They may know of companies undertaking research in your field.
  3. Consult http://www.skillnet.ca/index.htm or http://campus.workopolis.com/index.html which contains résumés of recent graduates. You may also post your résumé there and check out the positions advertised by employers.
  4. Use Industry Canada’s Canadian Company Capabilities Web page at http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_coinf/engdoc/homepage.html?categories=e_com to help you find companies doing research in your field. From there, you can check a company’s own Web site to determine if it would be of interest to you. Many companies post job openings on their sites. Even if a company does not have any positions listed that require your particular qualifications, if they appear to be a great match for your expertise, get in touch with them anyway. Tell them about the IRDF program and that NSERC could potentially provide part of your salary.
  5. Try a general Web search using your favourite browser (e.g., Google, Dogpile). Conduct a search using key words relevant to your area of expertise (e.g., a search using Polymers +Canadian companies, provided dozens of links).
  6. Check the Web site of professional associations to which you belong. Many professional associations provide employment services or opportunities to post positions and résumés.
  7. Check The Alliance of Sector Councils' Web site (http://www.councils.org/tasc/nav.cfm?s=1main&p=links&l=e). A number of Sector Councils have established job banks to permit the matching of job seekers with employers.
  8. Look for job advertisements in newspapers or the scientific journals in your field.
  9. Use an on-line employment search service such as http://english.monster.ca/.
  10. Look through the list of attendees from any conferences you have attended. Are there any companies represented that would be interested in your research experience?
