Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF)

Tips for companies: How do I find a potential research collaborator?

If your company is looking for a collaborator to help you with your research, whether in connection with a potential project for an industrial R&D fellow, or otherwise, there are various ways to find the person you are looking for:

  1. Use NSERC’s Awards Search Engine (http://www.nserc.gc.ca/programs/result/database.htm) to find university researchers working in relevant areas of research. There is also a similar search capability on the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Web site at (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/826.html). The grantee(s) involved in the project(s) may be interested in collaborating with your company.
  2. Contact the Industry Liaison Office or Office of Research Services at local universities or universities that you know to be working in your field of research. These offices are often able to identify faculty members who can help you with your projects. Industry Canada’s Web page, Trans-Forum (http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/intf-tf.nsf/en/Home) includes links to various Technology Transfer Offices (Industry Liaison Offices, Centres of Excellence, Cégeps, university and college-related consortia, research parks, incubators and research centres) throughout Canada. This same site also provides an opportunity match service that can provide you with regular information on technology opportunities available at Canada’s universities, Centres of Excellence and federal and provincial laboratories.
  3. See Industry Canada’s Web site http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/inrti-rti.nsf/en/h_te02441e.html, which provides links to federal and provincial government research centres.
  4. The National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program at http://irap-pari.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/english/howirapcanhelpyou_e.html may be able to help you. In addition to the financial assistance programs for small and medium-sized businesses, IRAP has extensive networks to link entrepreneurs, people knowledgeable about local sources of financing, R&D institutions and technology brokers, and technology transfer centres.
