Postdoctoral

Who should read this?

You should read this if you would like to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship. The information and types of awards and fellowships outlined here are relevant only to applicants who have already obtained their doctorate, or who will obtain it within the next year.

Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF)

These fellowships provide financial contributions that support recent doctoral graduates engaged in industrial research and development.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowships

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has established the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Foreign Researchers. A limited number of promising young researchers are given the opportunity to conduct research in Japanese universities and in designated research institutions and laboratories. NSERC is responsible for selecting Canadian nominees for JSPS Fellowships.

Northern Research Internships

Northern Research Internships are tenable in a northern Canadian organization that will benefit from the research conducted, either directly or through the sharing of knowledge. The support helps senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows by facilitating extended stays and subsidizing the costs associated with activities in the North.

Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF)

These fellowships provide support to a core of the most promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. The fellowships are also intended to secure a supply of highly qualified Canadians with leading-edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government, and universities. NSERC encourages qualified Aboriginal researchers who are interested in the program to apply.

Postdoctoral Supplements

University Faculty Awards (UFA)

The goal of the University Faculty Awards program is to enhance the recruitment, retention and early career progression of women and Aboriginal people in tenure-track faculty positions in the natural sciences and engineering in Canadian universities, by providing opportunities for them to establish a strong research record.

Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories (VF)

This program provides promising young scientists and engineers with the opportunity to work with research groups or leaders in Canadian government laboratories and research institutions. Fellowships are awarded for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second and third year, at the discretion of the government department concerned.
