Inter-American Collaboration in Materials Research Competition Results![,](/web/20061109014104im_/http://www.nserc.gc.ca/images/line450x1.gif)
Inter-American
Collaboration in Materials Research (CIAM) is an international multi-agency
initiative through which participating countries support opportunities
for new interactions among materials researchers that leverage the strengths
of each country's scientific community. NSERC is the Canadian agency participating
in the second coordinated CIAM competition (2004-2005).
Researchers participating in CIAM projects request funding from their
respective country. Proposals from individuals or teams based at NSERC-eligible
institutions were submitted directly to NSERC. Collaborators from other
participating countries submitted their counterpart proposal to the participating
funding agency of their home country.
The adjudication of the CIAM applications involved a two-tier review
process; in order to be funded by NSERC, an application had to succeed
at both review stages. In the first stage of review, the NSERC Selection
Committee met in Ottawa from March 9 to 11 to review
applications. The CIAM award selection process did not involve joint
review; however, in the second stage of review, evaluation results were
compared and award selections negotiated among the counterpart agencies.
Of the 49 applications that were received by NSERC, nine were
chosen to receive funding, for a success rate of 18.3 per cent.
