A new director joins the NCE program on a full-time basis
Ottawa, January 31, 2000 - Jean-Claude Gavrel is the new full-time
director of the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program.
Prior
to joining the NCE program, Mr. Gavrel, a computer science graduate of the
University of Ottawa, worked for CATAAlliance (the Canadian Advanced Technology
Alliance) and was on executive loan to the Scientific Research and Experimental
Development Tax Credit Program of the Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency.
His previous appointments included terms as Vice-President of the Computer
Research Institute of Montréal (CRIM), Vice-President of PRECARN
Associates, and President of IVS Canada, a small Ottawa-based high technology
firm. PRECARN is an industrial research consortium that manages one of
the NCEs, the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems.
Mr. Gavrel has over twenty years' experience in the delivery and management
of high-tech product development and research programs, which will serve
him well in his new position.
This is the first time the program will have a dedicated director, a
position created as the result of the program receiving a 63% budget increase
in the last federal budget. The NCE Management and Steering Committees
are grateful to André Isabelle for managing the program for the
past two years while also heading NSERC's Strategic Projects and Research
Networks Division. André will continue in his present capacity
at NSERC and assume a new responsibility as the NSERC representative of
the Industry Canada, Tri-Council and CFI Operational Committee for the
21st Century Chairs for Research Excellence.
