NSERC and Nortel Networks partners in new Telecom Software Engineering Research Chair at University of Waterloo
,

(Waterloo, Ontario) – Dr. Tom Brzustowski, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, announced today, at the University of Waterloo, the new NSERC-Nortel Networks Industrial Research Chair in Telecom Software Engineering. The Chairholder is Dr. Ric Holt. The federal contribution is $600,000 to be paid over the next five years.

"Canadian innovation in telecommunications is recognized worldwide," said Andrew Telegdi, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo on behalf of the Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for NSERC. "This Government of Canada investment provides another boost to this country's great track record as a global leader in the field of Telecom Software Engineering."

Successful, efficient software has been a cornerstone of Nortel Networks telecommunication products since the 1970s and the University of Waterloo has been providing and training acknowledged world-class software developers. The work of this Chair will further build up Canada's expertise in telecommunications software engineering.

Chairholder Dr. Holt described the Chair's work as "a logical continuation of Canada's record of excellence. Whatever the economic climate, this is an excellence that will always be maintained."

NSERC president Dr. Tom Brzustowski: "Telecommunications will always be a Canadian strength. This Chair's research program will not only help keep us ahead but it will also train graduate students who will be creating future generations of products."

NSERC is the primary federal agency investing in people, discovery and innovation. The Council supports both basic university research through research grants, and project research through partnerships among universities, governments and the private sector, as well as the advanced training of highly qualified people.
