1999 NSERC Grants and Scholarships Competition Results Announced
,

April 12, 1999 - (Ottawa, Canada) On April 12, Tom Brzustowski, President of NSERC, announced the awarding of 2,693 new research and equipment grants to Canadian university professors, as well as 1,784 new awards to research students and fellows across the country. "Our investments are part of a nationwide effort to strengthen university research in Canada," he said.

"We are making it easier for some of our brightest scientists and engineers to realize their potential in Canada," said Dr. Ron Duhamel, Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development). "In both the 1998 and 1999 Budgets, the federal government announced major increases to NSERC's annual funding," he said. "This makes a remarkable difference in the outlook for Canadian research, and for the future prosperity of the country. Money invested in research and in young researchers enhances our national competence, leads to innovation and makes Canada more productive by increasing the value of what Canadians produce."

NSERC also supports research projects with industry partners that put the new knowledge to productive use in the economy. The results of those competitions are announced throughout the year.
