Canada's Top Science Award to Be Announced Monday at Noon

Winner to receive Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering
NSERC guarantees winner $1 million in research funding
Winner to be recognized in House of Commons

Ottawa, Ontario, December 5, 2004 – The winner of the 2004 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering will be named at noon Monday, December 6, by Science and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC). The three finalists, announced last month, are David Dolphin (University of British Columbia), André Salama (University of Toronto) and John Smol (Queen’s University).

The winner will be recognized by the Honourable Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House of Commons, following Question Period, and will receive the medal Monday evening during a ceremony at the National Gallery of Canada.

Named after the late Canadian Nobel Laureate, Gerhard Herzberg, the prize is widely recognized as the country’s most prestigious science award.
