New NSERC-OPG Industrial Research Chair in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Waterloo Will Tackle Air Pollution
,

Waterloo, Ontario, June 25, 2002 – Andrew Telegdi, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo, today announced on behalf of Allan Rock, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the new NSERC-Ontario Power Generation Industrial Research Chair in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Waterloo. NSERC is providing $1,750,000 over five years and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) $1,500,000.

"A key to innovation is research, which yields new knowledge and creates new opportunities," said Allan Rock. "This industrial research chair will tackle important atmospheric questions, and provide knowledge that will help industry be competitive while maintaining the highest air quality standards."

"Our air pollution research will seek solutions to air quality problems ranging from smog in Southern Ontario to atmospheric contamination in the Arctic," explained new chairholder Dr. James Sloan. "Two of the most important issues are urban air pollution and climate change. Current evidence indicates that aerosols affect climate as much or more than greenhouse gases, and research in this area is needed urgently."

"The University of Waterloo is to be congratulated for its role in stimulating new private and public sector partnerships and for leading the way in this important venture," said Andrew Telegdi.

"Air quality in Southern Ontario is affected by many sources. We are doing our part to reduce emissions from our fossil generating stations by investing in clean air technologies and cleaner fuels," said Ron Osborne, President and CEO of OPG. "Today we are helping to launch this new research chair which will advance basic knowledge of how pollution travels and how best to tackle major sources of emissions such as transboundary pollution and the transportation sector."

NSERC President Dr. Tom Brzustowski stated, "The University of Waterloo and Ontario Power Generation have responded to the pressing problems of air contamination with a bold partnership whose work will be of benefit to all of Canada."

NSERC is a key federal agency investing in people, discovery, and innovation. The Council supports both basic university research through research grants and project research through partnerships among universities, governments and the private sector, as well as the advanced training of highly qualified people.

On February 12, 2002, the Government of Canada launched Canada's Innovation Strategy, two papers that lay out a plan to address skills and innovation challenges for the next decade. The paper released by Minister Rock was entitled Achieving Excellence: Investing in People, Knowledge and Opportunity. It proposes goals, targets and priorities for Canada over the next decade to: create knowledge and bring ideas to market more quickly; ensure a skilled workforce in the new economy; modernize business and regulatory policies while protecting the public interest; and strengthen communities by supporting innovation at the local level. Today's announcement supports this strategy.
