NSERC awards 267 Canada Graduate Scholarships ,

Ottawa, Ontario, July 8, 2003 – Canada Graduate Scholarships are now being offered to applicants in the most recent (2003) NSERC Scholarships and Fellowships competition. A total of 143 awards are being made available at the doctoral level, and 124 at the master’s. Highest ranked applicants receive letters of offer, which they are free to accept or refuse.

Scholars accepting the prestigious CGS award at the doctoral level will see their scholarship funding increased to $35,000 a year for up to three years; those accepting at the master’s level will receive $17,500 for one year.

“We are really pleased that we can offer new financial incentives and recognition to our very best students,” said Isabelle Blain, NSERC Vice-President Research Grants and Scholarships. “But there’s even more good news in that we can now offer additional NSERC scholarships this year. Since the Canada Graduate Scholarships replace NSERC scholarships, these can now be offered to students who ranked high but fell just below the cutoff line. We are making offers to those students as well.”

Winners will be announced later in the summer.

The new Canada Graduate Scholarships are the flagship scholarships of NSERC’s postgraduate awards program. This fall, the Canada Graduate Scholarships will be integrated into the 2004 NSERC scholarship competition in such a way as to benefit as many students as possible.

At its June meeting, NSERC Council recommended an immediate start to the Canada Graduate Scholarships program announced in the last Federal Budget. The program is designed to make graduate studies more attractive and develop the additional faculty and research leaders that will be needed to move Canada into the top rank of R&D performing nations.

In a related decision, Council also increased the value of its regular doctoral scholarships to $21,000 a year retroactive to April 1.

For the remainder of the summer, NSERC will be communicating with students and graduate offices across Canada. Individuals with questions about their awards should direct inquiries to schol@nserc.ca.
