,

Ottawa, Ontario, June 11, 1997 – The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will present some of the country's most prestigious research prizes at a ceremony this evening at the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Dr. J. Keith Brimacombe of the University of British Columbia is the 1997 winner of the Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.

Named as the 1997 Steacie Fellows are: Dr. C. Ross Ethier, University of Toronto; Dr. Ian Manners, University of Toronto; Dr. Robert J. Tibshirani, University of Toronto; Dr. Andrew J. Weaver, University of Victoria. The E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships provide the recipients with an opportunity to expand their research programs and obtain additional research assistance.

The winners of NSERC's national doctoral prize competition will also be honoured. Dr. Tricia L. Breen (University of Windsor); Dr. Timothy Moon-Yew Chan (University of British Columbia); Dr. John R. Long (Carleton University); and Dr. Gordon K. Squires (University of Toronto) were each judged to have completed the most outstanding doctoral research in their fields last year. Winners will receive a silver medal and a cash prize of $5,000 from the federal government.

"Tonight we applaud nine Canadians at various stages in their research careers who have demonstrated outstanding excellence and accomplishment in creating new knowledge and in putting it to productive use," said Dr. Tom Brzustowski, President of NSERC. "They have made great contributions to the advancement of human knowledge and the Canadian system of innovation."

The prizes are awarded annually by NSERC, the national instrument for making strategic investments in Canada's capability in science and technology. NSERC supports both basic university research through research grants and project research through partnerships of universities with industry.
