Note: You must have a Canadian Forest Service (CFS) scientist on your advisory committee. You may wish to start your search for a suitable CFS scientist before you receive your PGS, IPS or CGS (see below).

What's the purpose of the supplement?

The purpose of the CFS Graduate Supplements is to:

  • promote graduate research in forestry in Canada;
  • encourage and support graduate students to carry out all, or part, of their research at national CFS centres; and
  • increase contacts between CFS research scientists and Canadian universities.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

At the time you apply for a scholarship supplement, you must have received a PGS, IPS or CGS, and you must be studying or planning to study in a forestry faculty or in another faculty where you are/will be working on a research project directly related to forestry such as: forestry practices, environmental science, climate change, forest health, remote sensing or decision modelling. Major forest research priorities can be found by consulting the National Forest S&T Course of Action (see http://www.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/cfs-scf/science/courseofaction/areas_e.html).

In addition, a CFS research scientist must be on your advisory committee, and you must carry out all or part of your research in conjunction with one of the CFS's five lead centres:

  • Atlantic Forestry Centre (Fredericton)
  • Laurentian Forestry Centre (Sainte-Foy)
  • Great Lakes Forestry Centre (Sault Ste. Marie)
  • Northern Forestry Centre (Edmonton)
  • Pacific Forestry Centre (Victoria)

Note: CGS M, PGS M or IPS 1 award holders are eligible for one year of supplement support; CGS D, PGS D or IPS 2 award holders are eligible for two years of supplement support.

How do you apply?

To be considered for this supplement, you must submit the following to the CFS (see address below) by April 15 of the year in which you are awarded your postgraduate scholarship:

  • a copy of your Notification of Award from NSERC; and
  • a copy of your successful scholarship application (Form 200).

In addition, either through your university contacts, your own research, or with help from the CFS, you must identify and approach a potential CFS scientist to be a member of your advisory committee. You should begin the search for a suitable CFS scientist well before you actually apply. If you require assistance in finding a suitable scientist, the CFS (see information below) may be able to help you.

Value of supplement

If you are a successful applicant, in addition to NSERC's scholarship, the CFS will give you a taxable scholarship supplement of $5,000 per year for up to two years. Payment of the second year instalment (CGS D, PGS D or IPS 2 only) is conditional on the student continuing to meet the requirements under which the supplement was granted.

Review procedures

There are up to 15 supplements available. If the number of applicants is greater than the number of available supplements, a special CFS committee will review the applications. The committee will then recommend the eligible applicants it considers to have the best qualifications. Review criteria include the relevance of the project to CFS priority areas, and the educational achievements of the applicant.

Notification of decision

The CFS will contact all applicants in early to mid-summer.

Payment

The CFS is responsible for disbursing the scholarship supplement. It must also ensure that the recipient of the supplement continues to hold a Canada Graduate Scholarship or an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship, and meets the other requirements of the CFS graduate supplements. Failure to meet the requirements may result in termination of the award. The CFS must have your current contact information.
