What's the purpose of the supplement?

The purpose of the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Postgraduate Scholarship Supplements is to:

  • encourage and support graduate students to carry out research of interest to DRDC;
  • increase contacts between DRDC researchers and those at Canadian universities; and
  • foster graduate training of potential candidates for possible future employment at DRDC.

Are you eligible to hold one of these supplements?

To hold one of these supplements, you will be required to report on the progress of your research every six months to the Defence Research Scientist assigned as technical authority.

What kind of support do these supplements provide?

These supplements provide financial support to high-calibre graduate students who intend to pursue graduate training in an area of potential interest to defence. The supplements are part of a scholarship program established and administered by DRDC, which may award up to three new supplements each year.

DRDC may give supplement winners access to research facilities.

Value of supplement

If you are a successful applicant, in addition to NSERC's scholarship, DRDC will give you a supplement of $5,000 a year for two years, as long as you hold your NSERC PGS or CGS, and as long as you continue to meet the other requirements of the DRDC Postgraduate Scholarship Supplements Program.

How do you apply?

To be considered for this supplement, you must submit the following to DRDC by June 1 of the year in which you are awarded your scholarship:

  • a copy of your Notification of Award document from NSERC;
  • a copy of your successful scholarship application (Form 200); and
  • a statement of interest in R&D for defence/national security.

The application package should be sent to DRDC either by mail at the address below, or by e-mail at hr-rh@drdc-rddc.gc.ca.

Review procedures

A special committee will review the applications submitted to DRDC and recommend the applicants it considers to have the best qualifications.

Notification of decision

DRDC will select and contact the successful applicants and announce the results by August 1.

Payment

If you are a successful applicant, DRDC is responsible for releasing the scholarship supplement to you, and for ensuring that you continue to hold an NSERC PGS/CGS.

Instalment payments of the award will be made every 6 months for 2 years upon receipt and acceptance of the progress report.
