What is the purpose of the supplement?

The purpose of the Gordon M. MacNabb Scholarship Foundation Supplement is to:

  • promote graduate research in the field of intelligent systems;
  • encourage and support graduate students carrying out research in Canadian universities; and
  • establish linkages between graduate students and Canadian industry using intelligent systems.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

To hold a supplement, you must be a participant in a research project directly related to intelligent systems, such as artificial intelligence or robotics.

What kind of support do these supplements provide?

These supplements provide support to promising graduate students working towards a master's or doctoral degree in the broad area of intelligent systems. The Foundation can award up to two supplements each year.

Value of supplement

If you are a successful applicant, the Foundation will give you a supplement of $5,000 for one year.

How do you apply?

To be considered for this supplement, you must submit the following to the Gordon M. MacNabb Scholarship Foundation (see address below) by April 15 of the year in which you are awarded your postgraduate scholarship:

  • A copy of your Notification of Award from NSERC
  • A copy of your successful scholarship application (Form 200)
  • A brief explanation (maximum 300 words) showing how your proposed research will contribute to the advancement of intelligent systems technology
  • A letter of recommendation from your current or future supervisor supporting your supplement application

Review procedures

A special committee of the Gordon M. MacNabb Scholarship Foundation will review all applications and will recommend the eligible applicant(s) it considers to have the best qualifications.

Notification of decision

The Foundation will contact successful applicants and inform them of the results by May 10.

Payment

If you are a successful applicant, the supplement will be presented to you at the annual IRIS-Precarn Conference. Precarn is responsible for releasing the supplement to you and for ensuring that you continue to hold an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship. It must also make sure that you meet the other requirements of the Gordon M. MacNabb scholarship supplements.

The Gordon M. MacNabb Scholarship Foundation

The Gordon M. MacNabb Scholarship Foundation was set up to honour Gordon MacNabb, a tireless advocate of science and technology in Canada. Mr. MacNabb has been a champion of brilliant young people in science and engineering throughout his tenure as President of NSERC, as founding President of Precarn Inc., and as Scientific Leader of the Institute for Robotic and Intelligent Systems (IRIS). He has always believed that Canada's economic competitiveness and future prosperity are tied to innovation and leadership in science, technology, knowledge, and information-related activities.
