What's the purpose of the supplement?

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and NSERC have agreed to foster advanced studies in space science by offering a supplement to the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS M, PGS D and CGS M). The objective of the CSA postgraduate supplement is to:

  • foster advanced research in space science;
  • support the training of skilled personnel in space science.

The key result expected from this supplement is an increase in the supply of scientists and engineers with Ph.D.s and master’s degrees in space science disciplines of priority to Canada.

Are you eligible to hold a supplement?

The eligible applicant must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada at the time of application to the program;
  • be a graduate student engaged in master’s or doctoral studies in the natural sciences or engineering, or intend to pursue such studies in the following year;
  • be successful in obtaining a NSERC PGS D, PGS M or CGS M; and
  • be planning to carry out a research project directly contributing to the advancement of one of the following space science areas of interest to Canada:
    • Space Astronomy (including Astrophysics and Balloon-based research)
    • Space Exploration (including Planetary Sciences)
    • Solar-Terrestrial Relations and Space Physics
    • Atmospheric Environment
    • Physical Sciences (Microgravity and Fluid Sciences, Biotechnology)
    • Space Life Sciences (Bone Demineralization, Neurophysiology, Cardio-vascular Physiology)

Note: An individual who has received a scholarship from a federal source other than NSERC will not be eligible for this supplement.

What kind of support do these supplements provide?

The CSA may award up to six new Space Science Supplements per year. Successful applicants will be awarded a grant equal to a maximum of one third of the value of an NSERC PGS M ($17,300 per year), CGS M ($17,500 per year) or PGS D ($21,000 per year). Therefore, the maximum values of respective CSA Postgraduate Supplements is $5,767 per year, $5,833 per year and $7,000 per year, respectively.

How do you apply?

Applicants for this supplement must first apply for an NSERC PGS by completing Form 200, following NSERC’s instructions and meeting its deadlines. NSERC will evaluate the applications and send a Notification of Award to successful applicants.

To be considered for this supplement, please submit the following to the CSA (see address below) by May 1 of the year in which you are awarded your PGS or CGS M:

  • a copy of your Notification of Award from NSERC;
  • a copy of your successful scholarship application, including Form 200 and the Contributions and Statement section;
  • a copy of your academic transcripts (undergraduate and graduate); and
  • a completed and signed CSA Supplements Application Form, accompanied by a brief statement describing your proposed research project. The CSA Supplements Application Form can be found on the CSA Web site.

Review procedures

A Space Science review committee will evaluate and rank eligible applications according to the following criteria:

  • the applicant’s qualifications such as academic excellence, research ability and potential, and communication skills;
  • the relevancy of the proposed research project for space science needs;
  • the innovation potential;
  • the research methodology; and
  • the scientific or technical contribution to a Canadian space program/project.

Notification of decision

The CSA will contact applicants in writing to advise them of the results of the competition. A letter of agreement on the terms and conditions associated with the supplement will be sent to successful applicants.

Payment

The first year supplement will be paid in one instalment directly to the award recipients upon confirmation of their date of commencement of tenure of the NSERC CGS M, PGS M or PGS D. For the second year of the PGS D, the supplement will be payable upon receipt and acceptance of a progress report on the research project.
