Stem Cell Oversight Committee (SCOC)

Procedures for Submitting Stem Cell Research Information to the Stem Cell Oversight Committee (SCOC)

The date of the first SCOC meeting has not yet been set. It is anticipated that researchers will be informed of the results of the SCOC review within two weeks of the SCOC meeting.

Documents to be submitted by the Agency or other funding organization to the Stem Cell Oversight Committee (SCOC):
(Note that it is incumbent on the Agency or funding organization to obtain from the researcher any information not included in the application.)

For ongoing research:

CIHR-funded research:

The following documents must be provided to CIHR, to be received no later than June 2nd 2003:

  1. Your full name and FRN number of your grant (it is not necessary to send a copy of your application); AND
  2. A summary of the human stem cell research aspects of the project, written in lay language, including
    1. Objectives
    2. Progress to date
    3. Full methodological details relevant to the stem cell work. For projects involving existing human pluripotent stem cell lines that require SCOC review (see Frequently Asked Questions posted on this website), please provide the patient consent form including details on what information was provided to the patient, and any other document required to demonstrate that the cell lines meet the requirements of the Guidelines. If any of this information was impossible to obtain, please provide details.
    4. An explanation of why human stem cells are required for this project; AND
  3. A letter giving proof of approval of the research project from your REB.

Research funded by other agencies/organizations:

  1. The complete application (a single copy is sufficient). If no formal application for funding was submitted, a copy of relevant documents such as contracts (if available) should be sent; AND
  2. A summary of the human stem cell research aspects of the project, written in lay language, including
    1. Objectives;
    2. Progress to date;
    3. Full methodological details relevant to the stem cell work. For projects involving existing human pluripotent stem cell lines that require SCOC review (see Frequently Asked Questions posted on this website), please provide the patient consent form including details on what information was provided to the patient, and any other document required to demonstrate that the cell lines meet the requirements of the Guidelines. If any of this information was impossible to obtain, please provide details.
    4. An explanation of why human stem cells are required for this project; AND
  3. A letter giving proof of approval of the research project from your REB

For new research projects

Applications for funding from CIHR:

If you determine that your project requires review by SCOC or if CIHR informs you of this, you should send the following documents to CIHR in addition to your application. You do not need to send any additional copies of your application beyond those normally required by CIHR.

  1. A summary of the human stem cell research aspects of the project, written in lay language, including
    1. Objectives;
    2. Preliminary results, if any;
    3. Full methodological details relevant to the stem cell work. For projects involving existing human pluripotent stem cell lines that require SCOC review (see Frequently Asked Questions posted on this website), please provide the patient consent form including details on what information was provided to the patient, and any other document required to demonstrate that the cell lines meet the requirements of the Guidelines. If any of this information was impossible to obtain, please provide details.
    4. An explanation of why human stem cells are required for this project; AND
  2. A letter giving proof of approval of the research project from your REB (if available)
