Saskatchewan Health Legislation

The Ambulance Act

  • Regulates emergency medical technologists/paramedics and funding of ambulance boards.
  • To be amended or repealed due to health regions now funding ambulance services.

The Cancer Foundation Act

  • Sets out funding relationship between Saskatchewan Health and the Saskatchewan Cancer Foundation and its responsibility to provide cancer related services.

The Change of Name Act, 1995

  • Administers the registration of legal name changes for residents of Saskatchewan.

The Chiropody Profession Act

  • Regulates the profession of chiropody/podiatry.

The Chiropractic Act, 1994

  • Regulates the chiropractic profession.

The Dental Care Act

  • Governed the Department’s former dental program and currently allows for the subsidy program for children receiving dental care.

The Dental Disciplines Act

  • Omnibus statute regulates the six dental professions of dentistry, dental hygiene, dental therapists, dental assistants, denturists and dental technicians.

The Department of Health Act

  • Provides the legal authority for the Minister of Health to make expenditures, undertake research, create committees, operate laboratories and conduct other activities for the benefit of the health system.

The Dietitians Act

  • Regulates the dietitian profession

The Emergency Medical Aid Act

  • Provides protection from liability for physicians, nurses and others when they are providing emergency care.

The Health Districts Act

  • Governs health districts

The Health Facilities Licensing Act

  • Governs the establishment and regulation of health facilities such as non-hospital surgical clinics

The Health Information Protection Act

  • Protects personal health information in the health system in Saskatchewan.
  • Establishes a common set of rules that emphasize the protection of privacy, while ensuring that information is available to provide efficient health services.
  • The Health Information Protection Act came into force September 1, 2003.

The Health Quality Council Act

  • Governs the Health Quality Council, which is an independent, knowledgeable voice that provides information and advice for achieving the best possible health care using available resources within the province.

The Hearing Aid Act

  • Governs the provinces hearing aid and audiology program — to be repealed.

The Hearing Aid Sales and Services Act

  • Regulates private businesses in Saskatchewan involved in the selling of hearing aids. (not yet proclaimed)

The Hospital Standards Act

  • Regulates the standards for services delivered in hospitals.
  • Outdated and under review — to be repealed.

The Housing and Special-care Homes Act

  • Regulates the establishment, licensing and funding of special-care homes (long term care facilities) in the province.
  • Outdated and under review given transfer of responsibility to health regions.

The Human Tissue Gift Act

  • Regulates organ donations in the province.

The Licensed Practical Nurses Act, 2000

  • Regulates licensed practical nurses in the province.

The Medical and Hospitalization Tax Repeal Act

  • Ensure that premiums cannot be levied under The Saskatchewan Hospitalization Act or The Saskatchewan Medical Care Insurance Act.

The Medical Laboratory Licensing Act, 1994

  • Governs who can operate a medical laboratory and the services that can be provided by them.

The Medical Laboratory Technologists Act, 1994

  • Regulates the profession of medical laboratory technology.

The Medical Profession Act, 1981

  • Regulates medical physicians.

The Medical Radiation Technologists Act

  • Regulates medical radiation technologists.

The Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Act

  • Raises awareness of prostate cancer in Saskatchewan.

The Psychologists Act, 1997

The Public Health Act

  • Some sections of the old Act remain in force in order that governing boards of some facilities continue to operate.

  • Provides authority for the establishment of public health standards, such as public health inspection of food services.

The Registered Nurses Act,1988

  • Regulates registered nurses.

The Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act

  • Regulates registered psychiatric nurses.

The Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation Act

  • Governs the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, which manages funding programs to support a balanced array of health research in Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Medical Care Insurance Act

  • Sets out authority for the province’s medical care insurance program and payments to physicians.

The Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Act

  • Regulates speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

The Tobacco Control Act

  • Provides authority to limit tobacco sales to young people under the age of 18
  • Sets out authority to provide public protection from second-hand smoke

The Vital Statistics Act, 1995

  • Administers the registration of births, deaths, marriages, adoptions and divorces in the Province of Saskatchewan.

The Youth Drug Detoxification and Stabilization Act

  • Provides authority for the detoxification and stabilization of youth who meet the criteria of suffering from severe drug addition and abuse.

The White Cane Act

  • Sets out the province’s responsibilities with respect to services for the blind.
