The 2006 OGI Summer Research Fellowship:

The OGI Summer Research Fellowship offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful, real-life research in the area of genomics, proteomics or bioinformatics. It is the fruit of our commitment to building the future of genomics in Ontario.

Last summer, the OGI sponsored five Research Fellows to study genomics. In the summer of 2006, the Ontario Genomics Institute will again sponsor Research Fellows to engage in the study of genomics. Fellows may study genomics, proteomics or bioinformatics in a number of ways, through:

1. Laboratory Research;
2. Ethical, Economic, Environmental, Legal and/or Social Analysis;
3. Development of and/or Analysis of Policy.

Typically, the three main subject areas of OGI Summer Research Fellowships are in Health and Medicine; Environment & Forestry; and Agriculture.

This Research Fellowship not only provides the successful candidate the opportunity to work, but also includes a mandatory orientation session at OGIs offices, student participation in a journal club which meets bi-weekly via teleconference and a final meeting where students present their summers' work by way of a PowerPoint presentation, as well as in poster format to their supervisors, OGI staff and special guests.

Who are OGI Fellows?

Fellows are academically proficient, motivated individuals who have a serious, career interest in genomics, proteomics or bioinformatics. They are Ontario residents and undergraduate students at Ontario universities working towards their first degree, but will not have completed their fourth year of university at the commencement of the Summer Fellowship. Applicants currently enrolled in an undergraduate professional degree program are not eligible to apply.

Fellows must be in good academic standing, having earned a cumulative average of at least a B+, as defined by your university.

What is the value of an OGI Summer Fellowship?

The value of the Summer Research Fellowship is $4,500. In addition, a travel allowance will be available to students and supervisors located outside of the Greater Toronto Area to offset the costs of attending OGI Summer Fellowship events.
Universities are strongly encouraged to support these outstanding students by supplementing the amount of the award using other sources, such as university funds or any other research funds. Universities may also provide fringe benefits.

How do I apply for an OGI Summer Research Fellowship?

The application package consists of five files:
  • Instructions For Applicants (PDF);
  • Research Fellowship Application Form (Word);
  • Information For Supervisors (PDF);
  • Supervisor's Recommendation Form (Word);
  • Academic Recommendation Forms (Word).

    You will need to find an appropriate person who is involved in genomics-related research and is willing to act as your supervisor for the summer. Bear in mind that your research must take place in the Province of Ontario. With the guidance of your supervisor you will write a proposal for the research you plan to do. In addition, you will need to complete the application form, arrange for your transcripts and three references (one from your supervisor and two academic) to be mailed directly to the OGI c/o the Innovation Institute of Ontario, HL20 - 101 College Street, Heritage Building, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1L7.

    Application Deadline: Monday, February 6, 2006

    Please note that assembling all the necessary components for the application may require several weeks.

    Fellowships Awarded: Friday, March 10, 2006
