Dispute Settlement at the WTO

Given that there are over 140 Members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), including nearly all of the major trading countries, it should not be surprising that trade disputes arise from time to time concerning the interpretation of the rules contained in the WTO Agreements and how they are being applied by WTO Members. What is surprising, however, is how relatively few disputes there are given that the value of goods and services exports worldwide exceeds US$6 trillion.

Canada requests WTO panel on China’s treatment of auto parts

The Government of Canada has requested a World Trade Organization (WTO) panel on China’s treatment of imported auto parts. The United States and the European Union are making similar requests.

Canada requests WTO consultations on China's treatment of imported auto parts

The Government of Canada has requested WTO consultations with China on that country's import arrangements concerning automotive parts. On March 30, 2006, the U.S. and the EU also requested consultations on this issue. Japan joined the U.S. and the EU in their requests for consultations on April 11, 2006.
