Current WTO Negotiations

Informal Meeting of Ministers, Geneva, June 28 – July 1, 2006

WTO members met in Geneva to try to advance the agriculture and non-agricultural goods market access (NAMA) negotiations.

WTO ministers meeting in Geneva worked hard to bridge differences in negotiating positions, but were unable to reach agreement on rules and commitments in the areas of agricultural market access, domestic support and non-agriculture market access.

It is clear that further progress will depend on movement from the U.S. in agricultural domestic support, the EU in agricultural market access and Brazil and India in non-agricultural market access – the three major stumbling blocks. Canada will continue to work very closely with other WTO Members to strongly promote our interests in these negotiations. .

There is still a lot of work to do before the conclusion of a broader trade package that includes agriculture, non-agricultural market access, services, rules, trade facilitation and development. As the WTO negotiations proceed, Canada will continue to consult with provinces and territories and industry stakeholders, in support of a successful outcome to the Doha Round by the end of 2006.
