  • Trade Mission to Chile: Mission Accomplished
    The trade mission to Santiago, which took place from December 2 to 5, 2003, and involved 51 businesses, enabled Canadian firms to land new business deals in Chile and reaffirmed Canada's commitment to the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA). This agreement benefits both countries; indeed, trade and investment have climbed steadily since it came into effect. This week's edition of Stories of the Week highlights a variety of firms that took part in the trade mission to Chile and signed deals with Chilean companies.

  • Free Trade Area of the Americas
    Canada is participating in the 8th Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) ministerial meeting, which will take place in Miami, Florida, on November 20 and 21, 2003. This meeting of the hemisphere's 34 trade ministers marks the midpoint in the final phase of the negotiations, which are scheduled to conclude by January 2005. This year's ministerial meeting, co-chaired by Brazil and the United States, will provide an opportunity for trade ministers to review progress to date and to provide guidance and instructions on how to move forward in order to meet the January 2005 deadline.   • Canada Launches NAFTA Challenge of U.S. Wheat Ruling
    On October 3, the Government of Canada launched a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) challenge of an August 29, 2003 countervail ruling by the U.S. Department of Commerce that imports of certain types of Canadian wheat are subsidized. The government is also considering various legal options following a further decision in this dispute by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Looking at two different kinds of Canadian wheat imports, the ITC ruled that imports of durum wheat did not injure the U.S. industry. It did, however, find that imports of hard red spring wheat harm the U.S. industry. As a result, the U.S. will impose duties on imports of hard red spring wheat. Find out more...

  • NAFTA Panel Declares U.S. Softwood Lumber Countervailing Duty Illegal
    International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew announced that a NAFTA dispute settlement panel ruled that the United States' application of countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber was contrary to U.S. law. The NAFTA panel found in favour of Canada, requiring the U.S. Department of Commerce to correct their determination within 60 days.

  • Report on NAFTA Chapter 11 Multi-stakeholder Consultations
    On May 28, 2003, Canada hosted a multi-stakeholder consultation session in Montreal. This consultation was held on behalf of the NAFTA (Chapter 11) Investment Expert Group, which is made up of officials of the Canadian, U.S., and Mexican governments, and is charged by the NAFTA Free Trade Commission, which is made up of the Trade Ministers of the NAFTA Parties, with reviewing and examining the operation and implementation of Chapter Eleven. The daylong meeting was held with a view to assist the Investment Experts Group in identifying shared priorities for further work, and in preparation for the next Free Trade Commission meeting to be held in the fall of 2003.   • Second Thematic Meeting Open to Civil Society
    The FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) instructed in April 2003 the Committee of Government Representatives on the Participation of Civil Society to organise a series of Thematic Meetings open to all sectors of civil society on issues related to the FTAA negotiations. The First Thematic Meeting was held on Wednesday June 25, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and dealt with the issue of agriculture. A Second Thematic Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 23, in Santiago, Chile, and will address the issue of services, with particular emphasis on telecommunications, professional services, and cultural industries. Other sectors of interest to civil society participants will also be discussed. The notice and agenda of this meeting are available on the official FTAA website at http://www.ftaa-alca.org.   • NAFTA panel orders U.S. to correct flawed softwood anti-dumping determination
    International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew welcomed today's NAFTA panel decision which states that the United States' application of anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood lumber was inconsistent with U.S. domestic law.

  • Canada releases the Initial Environmental Assessment of the FTAA Negotiations
    The Initial Environmental Assessment of FTAA negotiations is the first of three reports to be released. The first report suggests that, in the aggregate, the environmental impacts on Canada are likely to be minimal. Any potential environmental impacts will be further analyzed in the second and third reports. The Government of Canada welcomes comments on this report, as well as comments on anticipated economic, environmental and policy-making impacts on Canada as a result of the FTAA negotiations.
