Statement on Release of Telecom Policy Review
OTTAWA-GATINEAU — Following today's release of the report by the Telecom Policy
Review Panel, Charles Dalfen, Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and
Telecommunications Commission, made the following statement:
"Although we have not had the opportunity to review the report in
detail, the CRTC would like to recognize the panel's diligence in
undertaking this timely study of Canada's telecommunications framework.
The last overarching review took place many years ago.
The Report is the result of a process initiated by the Government of
Canada that mandated the Telecom Policy Review Panel to examine Canada's
telecommunications policy and regulatory framework. The CRTC welcomed the
opportunity to participate in this review and submitted a discussion
paper. We believe the review has provided Canadians with an opportunity to
think about where Canada has been, where it is now and about where it
should go in telecommunications in the context of a global information
society."
The Commission looks forward to further dialogue and discussion that
will follow the Report.
The CRTC
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is an
independent public authority that regulates and supervises broadcasting and
telecommunications in Canada. The CRTC is governed by the Broadcasting Act
and the Telecommunications Act and reports to Parliament through the
Minister of Canadian Heritage.
