British Columbia Association of Broadcasters

The BC Association of Broadcasters represents the interests of the vast majority of private over-the-air radio television broadcasters in the province. Associate members of the Association include advertising agencies, public broadcasting enterprises and many other businesses which relate to the broadcasting industry.

The BCAB represents member stations in provincial regulatory issues, legal issues pertaining to broadcasting and offers information and support to all member on issues that affect private broadcasters in the province. In addition, the BCAB spearheads a yearly provincial public services campaign that compliments the local community support at which BC Broadcasters excel.

In 1990, the BCAB developed a powerful campaign to address the issue of racism. The Racial Harmony Campaign was so successful in raising awareness on the issue that it was adopted nationally by all of Canada's private broadcasters and has subsequently been adopted by the federal government. Honoured provincially and nationally, The Racial Harmony Campaign is just one example of the committment BC broadcasters have to public service.

The BCAB continues to work in partnership with the Provincial government with the Counter Attack campaign. Yearly, millions of dollars in air time is donated by British Columbia broadcasters to raise awareness about the consequences of drinking and driving. The strength of this partnership has resulted in measurable reductions in drinking and driving in the province.

The BCAB also launched an anti-violence initiative with the Government of B.C. in 1998.  This 10 year commitment to the Province is helping to raise awareness of the societal problems caused by violence in many different facets of our society

One of the most long-established and essential communications industries in the province, BC's private broadcasters have a vital role to play in the development of new infrastructures to serve British Columbians. It is another area in which we are committed to serving our communities today and in the future.

This year, as the BCAB completes another year of service, we look forward to the future with enthusiasm and a continued commitment to broadcast excellence.
