Canadian Firms - International Trade Success Stories

Stories of the Week - November 12, 2001

Knowledge and know-how : an exportable asset
Marshall Macklin Monaghan Ltd., Toronto, Ontario

Marshall Macklin Monaghan Ltd. (MMM) has worked in more than 40 countries in the Middle East, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. The Thornhill-based consulting firm provides services in sectors ranging from transportation, including airports, roads and ports, to environmental engineering, including water supply, waste water treatment and solid waste management, to water resource management, geomatics and building engineering.

MMM is a world leader in the private build-operate-transfer model of airport development. In 2000, MMM, in association with a Turkish consulting company, completed a project involving the preparation of master plans for the expansion and improvement of 26 airports across Turkey. The $2-million contract was awarded to the company by the Turkish government against stiff competition from U.S. and European firms. Dave Duggan, Executive Vice-President of MMM International, has been involved in the region for 30 years and believes that Turkey has enormous potential. "People are generally easy to work with," says Duggan, "and the business climate is excellent."

MMM has offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Boston, Massachusetts, as well as representatives in Hungary, Turkey, Barbados, Trinidad, Uruguay, Honduras and the Middle East.

RSW International, Montreal, Quebec

Over the past 30 years, RSW International -- the international arm of Groupe RSW, a Montreal-based consulting engineering firm -- has completed assignments in more than 40 countries worldwide.

"Our international activities are of paramount importance," says Claudio Vissa, Vice President International) . "About one third of RSW's revenue and staff are generated by exports."

Among RSW's current projects are the Esen II hydroelectric plant in southwest Turkey, to be commissioned in 2002, and two hydro power plants in India. The firm is also providing technical assistance for the construction of major hydro power plants in Iran and was recently retained for a CIDA-assisted feasibility study of a wind energy farm in Jordan.

Groupe RSW specializes in engineering and project management in the energy, industrial, urban infrastructure, building, environment, transportation and mining sectors. It has offices in Quebec City and other cities in Quebec through its subsidiary Groupe LMB Experts-Conseils Inc., as well as operating centres in India, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Costa Rica and France.

Green living: knowledge that can be shared
E2 Environmental Alliance Inc., Calgary, Alberta

Since its establishment in 1998, E2 Environmental Alliance Inc. has provided environmental consulting and training services in Canada and in more than 25 countries on five continents, often in conjunction with local counterparts. E2's consultants and trainers have been particularly active in Latin America and Central Asia, but have also completed projects in Romania, Spain, Egypt, Russia, Indonesia and China.

Clients such as the Canadian International Development Agency and the Inter-American Development Bank have retained E2 to monitor long-term technical assistance programs to ensure that the needs of recipient countries are being met efficiently by the Canadian executing agents.

The company is also working closely with Indigenous communities in developing countries. "Our personnel derive much satisfaction from helping Indigenous peoples to understand the potential effects of resource development projects," says Leo Bouckhout, the firm's Managing Director. "We also prepare them to actively participate in the related decision-making process in their countries."
