Pope & Talbot Inc. v. Government of Canada
On March 25, 1999, Pope & Talbot, Inc., a U.S. investor with a Canadian subsidiary that operates softwood lumber mills in British Columbia, filed a claim alleging that Canada's implementation of the U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement violates its obligations under Chapter Eleven of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The tribunal released their decision on May 31, 2002 which, overall, found that Canada had not violated the NAFTA in its implementation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. The only violation arose from an administrative audit undertaken to verify Pope & Talbot's quota.
