|
|
Ottawa, 30 April 2004 |
|
The Commission has received
the following application: |
|
DEADLINE FOR INTERVENTION
4 June 2004 |
1. |
Across Canada
Application No.
2004-0077-1 |
|
Application by GLOBAL
TELEVISION NETWORK INC. and FOX SPORTS WORLD CANADA HOLDCO INC.,
partners in a general partnership doing business under the name of Fox
Sports World Canada Partnership. |
|
The licensee proposes to
change the condition of licence relating to the carriage of specific
sports which reads: |
|
The licensee shall provide a
national English-language Category 2 specialty television
service devoted exclusively to the coverage of cricket, rugby and
soccer. |
|
by the following condition: |
|
The licensee shall provide a
national English-language Category 2 specialty television service
devoted primarily to the coverage of cricket, rugby and soccer. No more
than 25% of all programming broadcast during the broadcast year shall be
dedicated to sports other than cricket, rugby and soccer. The licensee
may not dedicate any coverage to the following men’s sports: ice hockey,
basketball, baseball and North American-style football. Excepting
cricket, rugby and soccer, no more than 5% of the broadcast year shall
be dedicated to live coverage of any one particular sport. |
|
The licensee notes the
seasonal nature of the permitted sports makes it difficult to offer
attractive year-round service to its viewers. |
|
The licensee believes that
the proposed changes will not transform their service into one directly
competitive with existing analog specialty and pay services or Category
1 services. |
