Subject: Aliant Telecom Proposal with CRTC
I object to the Aliant Telecom Proposal to increase the basic residential
rate in rural areas of Nova Scotia from $25 per month to $29.95.
(1) In its recent notice to customers entitled "CRTC Reviewing Rules for
Local Telephone Service Prices" Aliant makes a statement in support of its
proposal which I believe to be erroneous. It is stated and I quote:
"Canadian prices for basic local service are lower than comparable services
in other major industrialized countries"
I have a second residence in Florida. Our basic monthly service there,
exclusive of taxes, is $14.95. This is with GTE in the Sarasota Bradenton FL
area.
(2) We have only had the $25 rate for about three years, having moved up
from about $19.95. That was a huge jump in a short time, now this further
proposed increase to $30 is unconscionable.
Allister MacLeod.
