News releaseSeptember 6th, 2002 The CRTC applauds a half century of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television network's accomplishmentsOTTAWA-GATINEAU -The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission offers heartfelt congratulations to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its Anglophone (CBC) and Francophone (SRC) television networks. For half a century, the professionals at the CBC and SRC have been working together to offer Canadians high quality programming. The CRTC is convinced that these two networks have made a valuable contribution toward our linguistic and cultural diversities by connecting the citizens of this country and enabling them to know each other better. The great adventure of Canadian public television began in 1952. The SRC French-language service debuted on September 6th of that year in Montréal, with the CBC English-language service starting in Toronto on September 8th. Over the course of their existence, CBC and SRC have shared our collective history. They have left their mark on Canadians through drama, documentaries, variety, information, public affairs, sports, art and culture. We all remember Don Messer's Jubilee, This Hour Has Seven Days, Wojek, The Beachcombers, King of Kensington, The Nature of Things, Street Legal, Anne of Green Gables, the Fifth Estate, North of 60 or more recently DaVinci's Inquest. And their children's programs! They kept us company after school and on weekends, and many marked our childhood and remain permanently etched in our memories: Howdy Doody, Chez Helene, Mr. Dressup, The Friendly Giant, Forest Rangers, to name but a few. We salute all the current and past employees for their accomplishments, and wish the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation at least another half century of success and creativity for the benefit of all Canadians! The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is an independent public authority that regulates and supervises broadcasting and telecommunications in Canada. - 30 - Media Inquiries: General Inquiries: Copies of today's documents are available through our Internet site (http://www.crtc.gc.ca) or by contacting the public examination room of any CRTC office.
