News Release April 9, 1998 CRTC LICENSES NEW RELIGIOUS TELEVISION STATION OTTAWA-HULL The CRTC today approved an application by Crossroads Television System Inc. for a new religious television station to serve Toronto, St. Catharines, Hamilton and Burlington (Decision CRTC 98-123). This is the second religious TV licence granted by the Commission since the implementation of the 1993 Religious Broadcasting Policy. Crossroads proposes to offer a majority of single-faith Christian programming and also include multi-faith news programs, non-Christian documentaries and programs promoting open dialogue among all religions. The Commission is convinced that Crossroads's firm and detailed commitments to ensure balance programming fully satisfy the balance guidelines outlined in the religious policy. To further enhance these commitments, Crossroads is encouraged to explore the full spectrum of diversity that exists within both the Christian and non-Christian experiences. "This new station should add to the diversity of Canadian programming available in Southern Ontario" stated CRTC Chair Françoise Bertrand. "It should provide a new window for the reflection of social values and cultural diversity to all age groups". Today's decision follows a public hearing held in Toronto in December 1997 at which the Commission considered and denied a competing application by Trinity Television Inc. The Commission wishes to thank everybody that participated in this hearing. - 30 - Contact: CRTC Communications Branch, Ottawa, K1A 0N2 Copies of this decision will be available through our Internet site ( http://www.crtc.gc.ca ) or by contacting the public examination room of any CRTC office.
