CRTC ISSUES LIST OF APPROVED NEW DIGITAL PAY
AND SPECIALTY TELEVISION SERVICES EARLY

OTTAWA-HULL — The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is taking responsible action in reply to an unfortunate and inappropriate disclosure to the media regarding the issuing of licences for the new digital pay and specialty television undertakings. The CRTC is concerned about the potential impact on the financial markets of the publicly traded companies affected.

Accordingly, the CRTC is releasing later today, abridged decisions on the applications for new digital pay and specialty television undertakings. These decisions deal with the approved Category 1 and Category 2 applications, the pay-per-view (PPV) and video-on-demand (VOD) television service applications, as well as the denied applications.

In the meantime, here is a list of the approved 16 English- and 5 French-language Category 1 applications, the 262 approved Category 2 applications, as well as the 2 approved PPV and 4 approved VOD applications. The Commission denied 66 Category 1 applications and 99 Category 2 applications.

The CRTC will publish the reasons, terms and conditions for its decisions on the new digital pay and specialty, PPV and VOD services as planned in mid-December.
