CRTC SETS UP WORKING GROUP TO PLAN FOR
TELEPHONE NUMBER DEPLETION IN THE 613 AND 819 AREA CODES

OTTAWA-HULL — Telephone numbers in the 613 and 819 area codes are projected to run out sometime in 2005-2006.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is in the process of setting up a relief planning committee to find solutions for telephone number depletion in the areas of Ontario and Quebec served by area codes 613 and 819.

The first meeting of the relief planning committee, chaired by the Canadian Numbering Administrator, will be held at Les Terrasses de la Chaudière, Central Building, 1 Promenade du Portage, 7th Floor Boardroom, Hull, Quebec, at the following times:

  • Thursday, February 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and
  • Friday, February 16th, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you can't attend these meetings but wish to participate or be kept informed of the work being done by the 613/819 relief planning committee, please write to the Secretary General, CRTC, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N2, fax the Commission at (819) 953-0795 or e-mail us at procedure@crtc.gc.ca , by March 6th, 2001.

Information regarding upcoming meetings, the initial planning document and related material can be accessed via the office of the Canadian Numbering Administrator at www.cnac.ca or by contacting the Science Applications International Corporation Canada at (613) 563-7242.

For more details, please contact Sheehan Carter, by telephone at (819) 997-4555 or by e-mail at sheehan.carter@crtc.gc.ca .

Background

The depletion of telephone numbers is not a new phenomenon. Over the past few years, the CRTC has initiated public processes in other parts of the country to develop and implement relief plans that best suit the needs of each specific area.

In most cases, telephone number depletion results in the addition of new area codes and the introduction of 10-digit dialing. Telephone number depletion is the result of the increased demand for telephone numbers for such things as cellular phones, pagers, fax machines and alarm systems.
