News ReleaseJanuary 31, 2001 CRTC ISSUES REPORT ON RADIO SERVICES IN THE GREATER TORONTO AREAOTTAWA-HULL — Today, in its report to the Government, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) puts forward proposals to ensure that the residents of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) receive a range of radio services that reflect the diversity of their languages and cultures. The CRTC acknowledges that the scarcity of suitable AM and FM frequencies may limit its ability to license new services. However, information provided to the CRTC suggests that the availability of a limited number of additional AM or FM frequencies may be technically feasible in the GTA. Should the Commission receive an application for a new programming service, priority will be given to the licensing of programming services that clearly reflect the diversity of languages, as well as the multicultural and multiethnic reality of the GTA. This new approach, namely a more focused call for applications, recognizes both the scarcity of frequencies in the GTA and the needs of the diverse population in that region. The CRTC concluded that, in addition to over-the-air frequencies, cable and satellite providers could distribute a greater variety of specialized audio services to these audiences. To that end, the CRTC intends to hold a public process to develop an appropriate regulatory framework. Reference documents: Public Notice CRTC
