JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Policy Integration and Coordination Section (PICS) and the Office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Policy Sector of the Department of Justice (DOJ) bring together the research, policy planning, coordination and evaluation functions that support the Department of Justice’s policy capacity and ensure horizontal integration and coherence across the Department’s policy related activities as well as the Office responsible for building and maintaining the Policy Sector’s management capacity. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to learn about and contribute to the functioning of the PICS, one of the federal government’s most interesting and dynamic policy areas, and the COO.

Students will gain the following types of experience depending on the Division/area they are placed in:

Intergovernmental and External Relations Division (IERD) – Students working in IERD will assist in the planning and coordination of meetings with key policy partners in the federal government, the provinces and territories as well as national non-governmental organizations. This experience will provide insights on the process used for external to DOJ consultations and how these consultations contribute to the policy development process;

P riorities and Planning Division (PPD) – Students working in PPD will assist in the planning and management of the DOJ’s Policy Committee and will contribute to development of strategic policy advice. Experience in the PPD will provide insights on the process used to plan and set policy priorities;

Research and Statistics Division (RSD) – Students working in RSD will participate in the conduct of justice related research projects and will learn about the processes used to deliver high-quality social science research and statistical services to the Department;

Evaluation Division (ED) – Students working in the ED will participate in the conduct of evaluation projects in relation to the Department’s policies, programs, operations and services;

Office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Students in the Office of the COO will learn about the big picture issues and operations of the Policy Sector by participating in the development of business plans, reports to Parliament, Sector communications materials and other strategies to strengthen the management capacity of the Sector.

Period 1: January 3, 2007 – April 20, 2007
Period 2: May 1, 2007 – August 31, 2007
Period 3: September 4 – December 31, 2007

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION:  

National Capital Region – Ottawa, Ontario

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT: 8 – 17 weeks
