JOB TITLE: Summer Severe Weather Forecaster Assistant

JOB DESCRIPTION:
These jobs present a wealth of learning opportunities for students interested in meteorology, and more specifically, the dynamics of summer severe weather including severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. The students will be working within the operational weather forecasting centre in Toronto under the supervision of the Lead Severe Weather Meteorologist. This will allow the students to experience, firsthand, the knowledge, skills and powerful computer technology required to produce timely and accurate summer severe watches and warnings for the people of Ontario.

Specific duties will include the daily production of a detailed surface analysis; assisting in copying and dissemination of forecast charts to the various operational desks; inputting of data and maintenance of a severe weather event database; processing forecast verification statistics; participating in post-event storm damage surveys; reviewing media reports of severe weather; and assisting meteorologists in the production of case studies relating to particular storm events.

Additionally during the actual occurrence of severe weather, the students would be expected to handle phone calls from severe weather spotters, then record and pass along this information to other members of the operational forecasting team.

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT: April 24 – September 01, 2007.

The two students will work a "three days on- three days" off cycle, of 10.75 hour days, roughly between the hours of 8:00am and 6:45pm (meaning while one student is working, the other would be on days off). This includes working on weekends and holidays, where additional premiums will be paid. These hours are guidelines. In a severe weather situation, the student may be expected to work beyond 6:45pm . Overtime would be paid in these events.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Various skill codes

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The students must have excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language and be able to work as a member of a team. A solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Power Point would be an asset.

In addition, a detailed knowledge of the geography of Southern Ontario is required, including the locations of major cities and towns. A general knowledge of the geography of Central and Northern Ontario is required, including the location of major towns and settlements. Knowledge of the names and locations of the American States bordering the Great Lakes is also required.
