Internship Program

The Parliamentary Information and Research Service of the Library of Parliament is offering an internship program to Canadian university graduate students. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to gain work experience in the policy and legislative process in Canada from a parliamentary perspective with the main research service for Parliament. Each year four interns with specific subject specializations will be selected for the twelve-month program (September to August).

The Purpose

The aim of the program is to develop among university graduates practical experience in the policy and legislative process in Canada from a parliamentary perspective; increase the knowledge of participants of the Canadian parliamentary system; and strengthen the assistance available to Parliament through the capacity of the Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

The Duties

Under the supervision of senior Branch officers, interns will:

• handle research responses to questions from parliamentarians, committees and associations;
• participate in committee work as part of the research team directly assisting a parliamentary committee;
• prepare studies on public policy topics relevant to federal parliamentarians.

Your Qualifications

Candidates must

• have completed a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Environment, Science, or Political or Social Science at a Canadian university; or be enrolled in a Canadian law school program (LL.B/LL.L) and have successfully completed first year;
• intend to pursue studies at the post graduate level (includes LL.B/LL.L);
• have a strong academic record;
• have an interest in Parliament or the public policy process;
• be objective and non-partisan;
• possess good interpersonal skills.

Preference will be given to bilingual candidates

Salary: $32,000

Duration: September 2007 - August 2008
