Radius

Please note that the radius indicated under "Who can apply" on the advertisement is the distance "as the crow flies", or in a straight line, between the job location and either the person's residence OR employment location. In summary, if you live OR are employed within the radius specified, you are eligible to apply.

Instructions on how to use the website of Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), Geomatics Canada, to determine eligibility for a process using radius.

  1. Click on the website of the department of Natural Resources Canada, Geomatics Canada at http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/. Click on English or French. Use the link to "Query by Name" or go directly to http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/search/search_e.php
  2. Once on the page, "Querying Canadian Geographical Names", type in the name of the job location in the white square after: "Key in a Canadian geographical place name:" .
  3. In the white square after "Choose feature type(s)" leave at the default position "All". Also verify that the radio button for "current" (the default) is selected.
  4. Click the box of the province/territory for the job location from the"Choose a Province or Territory" section or leave at the default position.
  5. Click the "submit Query" button. The page "Current Names: List of Records" is then displayed on the screen.
  6. There could be more than one location (for example, Richmond, B.C. and Richmond, P.Q.) . Identify the appropriate one and select by clicking on the "Info" button in the "Details" column. This will bring you to the "Current Names: Query Record Details" screen. **
  7. Scroll down to the button marked "Distance". Click the "Distance" button. This will bring you to the screen that will calculate the distance (point-to-point) in kilometers and miles between the job location entered in step (2) above and your employment/home location. Type the name of your employment/home location in the white square after "Type in your choice". **
  8. Click the box of the province/territory for your employment/home location from the section"Choose the region(s)" or leave at the default position.
  9. Click on the "submit search" button. The results of the search will appear on the screen. There could be more than one location. Identify the appropriate one and select by clicking on the appropriate "Info" button in the "Details " column. **

**Please note that the feature type "geographical area" is not used in calculating the distance between the job location and the employment/home location. This feature type includes larger areas such as counties and townships, which are less precise than the feature types such as "unincorporated area", "town", "city", or "village".

The distance ("as the crow flies" or a straight line), between the job location and the employment/home location will be displayed on the screen.

Additional Information for the Use of the NRCan Website:

  1. If the search results indicate "No records exist or your query was incorrectly typed", verify the spelling, order of words or punctuation. Do not enter accents or punctuation like apostrophe ('), comma (,), hyphen (-). Do not use abbreviations like St-John's. Use saintjohns or SAINTJOHNS instead. For more detailed information, read the " Read the querying instructions" prompt that will appear on your screen or go to http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/search/instructions_e.php
  2. In the event that your community is not listed on the NRCAN website, search using the next closest community. If it is not clear whether or not you are within the radius specified on the advertisement, please consult your local PSC office or the departmental official.
