Experience

Significant recent experience in the design and execution of on-site biological studies related to wildlife, plant life and their habitats.

Experience in the analysis and synthesis of scientific data.

Experience in the writing of advisories or scientific and technical reports.

Other Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment

  • ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
    - Master's degree in biology, ecology or the natural or environmental sciences, with a specialization in animal and plant ecology related to species at risk and/or wildlife and plant life habitats.
    - Master's or doctoral degree in the biological, natural or environmental sciences, with a specialization in ornithology.

    - Significant experience in the use of software, such as ArcView, MapInfo, SAS or Access, for the statistical and spatial analysis of complex data from various sources.
    - Experience in the modelling of wildlife and plant life populations for the purpose of making environment-related decisions.
    - Experience in the use of the latest technologies for studying the ecology of migratory birds (such as genetic or isotopic marking, use of weather and marine radar, traditional or satellite telemetry, etc.).
    - Significant experience related to the development and execution of projects for the conservation of wildlife, plant life and their habitats.
    - Experience in the environmental assessment of energy or regional development projects in terms of their impact on wildlife, plant life and their habitats in Quebec.
    - Experience in working alongside governmental and non-governmental stakeholders with a focus on developing and implementing a wildlife monitoring and conservation strategy, particularly in respect to migratory birds.
    - Experience in carrying out studies or inventories related to species at risk, migratory birds and their habitats in Canada.
    - Recent participation in species-at-risk recovery teams.
    - Significant experience in managing environment-related education (ERE) or nature interpretation programs.
    - Have worked with Aboriginal Community (Groups) on wildlife conservation and their habitats.
  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    - Reliability status.
    - Have a valid driver’s licence or be eligible to have a Quebec driver’s licence.
    - Be certified as having taken a course in first aid or be prepared to take such a course.
    - Agree to travel and work in remote or isolated locations for variable periods of time (only in the case of certain positions).
    - Agree to be called upon at any time and to work according to an irregular schedule (only in the case of certain positions).
    - Agree to travel and to work on airplanes, helicopters and boats (only in the case of certain positions).
    - Have a licence to operate a pleasure craft or be prepared to take the training to successfully acquire such a licence (only in the case of certain positions).
    - Have taken or be prepared to take a course in forest survival (only in the case of certain positions).
    - Undergo a medical examination (only in the case of certain positions).

Challenge

Organizes, implements and participates in biological studies/surveys, in a designated territory, required for the conservation, protection, management and rehabilitation of wildlife and their habitats.

Collects, analyzes research data to distinguish trends and determine the status of distribution, productivity and of survivorship of wildlife and their habitat.

Develops scientific reports, presentations and recommendations detailing results from research for scientific journals, committees and the department.

Assists in the development and evaluation of Departmental conservation programs and provides advice on the potential impact of proposed projects.

Participates in inter-agency, interdepartmental and interdisciplinary committees and work groups for the development and implementation of plans, strategies, programs and projects related to wildlife habitat conservation.

Establishes and participates in conservation partnerships with other government agencies, non-governmental organizations and the public.

Maintains a database on the status and trends of wildlife populations that is shared on a national basis.
