Secondary school diploma (i.e. successful completion of Grade 12 or in accordance with the applicable provincial education standard).

Please note the normal minimum education standard for CFIA inspector positions is completion of post-secondary education. Lack of post-secondary education will limit future career mobility within the Agency.

Preference may be given to applicants with additional training related to the job functions such as food safety, HACCP, first aid, or other occupational safety training.

Experience

Experience in EACH of the following:
1. Experience in food, feed, livestock, plant health or other related agricultural industries; and
2. Experience in working both independently and in a group setting; and
3. Experience using word processing and spreadsheet software such as Excel, Word and WordPerfect.

Other Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment

  • Available to work varying shifts and overtime, including weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Current successful medical evaluation.
  • Ability to work in environmentally challenging / physically demanding conditions.

Challenge

This position is developmental in nature and designed to accommodate the entrance and training of recruits to progressively more complex responsibilities in the Meat Hygiene (slaughter inspection) program. Key activities include ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections; advising supervisors/senior inspectors of inspection findings; participating in corrective or enforcement actions; explaining program requirements to industry clients; collecting and preparing lab samples; collecting and reporting data.

  • Screening will be based on review of a complete application demonstrating how the applicant's qualifications meet the requirements of the position.
