Challenge

On Canadian Coast Guard vessels home ported in Victoria, Sidney or Nanaimo, oilers perform maintenance, operational and custodial duties. Much of their work is targeted at operation and maintenance of propulsion equipment, electrical plant, deck machinery and other miscellaneous systems and the performance of other duties as needed.

Additional Requirements / Comments

  • Purpose of the Pool: Hiring from the pool, may be for casual, term or indeterminate employment. However, most opportunities for employment are of short duration, and arise at short notice. Note: Persons hired for casual employment are not eligible to participate in internal recruitment processes.
  • Inclusion in the Pool: Persons who meet the essential qualifications may be included in the pool. Intake to the pool is continuous. Candidates must provide proof of training and certifications requested, as well as identifying at least two references. Written tests, practical tests, interviews or other assessment methods may be used to confirm that candidates possess the essential qualifications. References will be contacted.
  • Hiring from the Pool: All persons offered employment must meet the essential qualifications, and conditions of employment. In addition, managers may consider some or all of the asset qualifications, operational requirements and organizational needs, when choosing from the pool.
  • Removal from the Pool: A qualified candidate’s name may be removed from the pool if he/she has been offered employment on three occasions and has not accepted, or if the candidate has accepted a period of employment and has not performed the duties in a satisfactory manner (as determined by the employer). A candidate may ask to have his/her name removed from the pool.
  • Period of Validity: The validity period of the Pool shall be established initially at three months, and may be extended at the discretion of the employer.
