A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Experience

Experience in operating and performing front line maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment such as motors, generators, power tools, and boats.

Other Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment

  • Security clearance: reliability.
  • Medical clearance.
  • Must be prepared to travel by helicopter and/or boat.
  • Standard First Aid certificate OR Occupational First Aid level 1 with a transportation endorsement OR higher certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Restricted Operator’s certificate (Maritime) or higher certificate.
  • Must be willing to live in isolated or semi-isolated crown-owned accommodations.
  • Must be willing and able to work shifts in a 24/7 environment in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to depart for a lightstation from a designated point of departure (Victoria, Port Hardy, Tofino, Bella Bella, or Prince Rupert, B.C.) as required.

Challenge

The operation and maintenance of a lightstation as an aid to navigation and for related services to the general public and other government departments. Provision of weather information for use by mariners and forecasters. Upon request, a detailed work description can be provided.

Additional Requirements / Comments

  • Lightkeeper positions are located along the British Columbia coast line in isolated or semi-isolated locations. Transportation via boat and/or helicopter will be provided to and from designated points of departure. Crown-owned accommodations will be provided for the duration of employment.
  • Please note candidates from outside the federal Public Service will be required to pay for their own travel to and from interview(s), which are expected to be conducted in Victoria, Vancouver, Port Hardy, and Prince Rupert, B.C.
  • Knowledge qualifications have a combined pass mark, as do ability qualifications. However, a separate pass mark will be established for each personal suitability qualification.
  • Candidates who were unsuccessful in a previous process must wait 90 days before re-applying.
  • * Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Canadian Coast Guard, is recruiting assistant lightkeepers for inclusion in an inventory used to fill temporary and/or permanent positions in its organization. Please note that most employment opportunities are temporary and become available at short notice. Salary ranges depend on the level (eg: LI-03) of the position being filled.
