Education

Useful Information

  • Graduation at the doctorate level from a recognized university in quantitative landscape ecology, ecology, biogeography or a closely related field.

Experience

Experience in the conception, planning and conduct of original quantitative research in wildlife landscape ecology, community ecology, or related fields.

Experience developing and writing high quality papers, including some as principal author, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals on subjects related to landscape or community ecology, conservation or similar fields.

Experience developing and applying of state-of-the-art statistical, mathematical, and computing methods for modelling landscape dynamics using geographic information and associated systems, and for estimating population or community responses to environmental changes.

Working effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research teams to address complex environmental or ecological research problems.

Quantitative modeling of landscape attributes (using ground, aerial or satellite data) and demographic vital rate estimates and(or) other population parameters linked with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), for instance, to predict future consequences of conservation actions, land use changes, or climate change, etc.

Applying landscape ecology theory to real-world conservation issues.

  • ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
    - Participation in multidisciplinary teams.
    - Demonstrated ability to model population responses in multi-species systems or communities to landscape change scenarios.
    - Experience designing and implementing field and simulation studies of wildlife populations in prairie, boreal and northern ecosystems.

    - Occasional travel by air and land is required including travel to remote locations on e.g., small aircraft.

Applicants who meet the above criteria will also be assessed against the Statement of Merit Criteria for this position.

Challenge

Conduct original research and develop innovative, quantitative modeling applications in landscape ecology to conservation and management of migratory birds, species at risk and their environments in order to understand and address conservation problems in key ecosystems (e.g., Prairie, Boreal Forest, Carolinian Forest and Arctic landscapes).

Enhance understanding of patterns and processes of current and predicted wildlife responses to: climate variability, land use changes (losses, fragmentation, restoration), agricultural and forestry practices, and disease distributions.

Provide landscape modeling support to research and operational programs across Canada.
