ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION
. Practical experience in the analysis of veterinary drugs, pesticides, or other organic contaminants, the use of chromatographic instruments and standard preparation and separation procedures used in residue chemistry.

Other Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment

  • The following merit criteria may be required for this position. Applicants should indicate in their application if they meet the merit criteria.
    • Preference will be given to those having experience in mass spectrometry and analysis of veterinary drugs, pesticides, or other organic contaminants in foods or animal tissues.
    • Preference will be given to individuals with specialization in chemistry.

    • Willingness and availability to work irregular and extended hours when necessary to meet operational requirements.

Challenge

Under the direction of a Senior Chemist or Research Scientist, and in accordance with the ISO 17025 CFIA Calgary Laboratory Quality Management System, the incumbents of the subject positions carry out new analytical method development and validation projects for trace level antibiotic and/or pesticide residue analysis using mass spectrometry and emerging technologies. The incumbents review validation data using statistical analysis and other means to evaluate the success of the projects, and provide advice and training to other members of the Laboratory. They provide scientific support to regulatory food safety analytical programs by ensuring that mass spectrometry instruments are properly maintained, that data and libraries are backed up and that staff are properly trained in the use of the systems. They may also be required to perform analysis on high priority investigational samples applying newly developed analytical methods, and to assess and report results on official samples.
