High school graduation or GED - Candidates must submit proof of education with application.

Experience

1. Some experience in the telecommunications environment, e.g. sending and receiving classified and non classified messages on the appropriate communications network.
OR

2. Some experience as a communicator in another police department or emergency service agency, e.g. 911 or fire department.

Other Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment

  • Must work shift work.
  • Must meet the RCMP medical profile standards established for the position.

Qualified candidates will be required to complete the RCMP typing test. Those reaching 40 wpm will proceed to write an aptitude examination. Based on the results of the exam, candidates may be interviewed by a Structured Interview Board. An in depth screening including psychological assessment, security interview, audio test and security clearance are also required. Successful candidates will be provided with eight weeks of classroom and on-the-job training, after which a term contract of 20 to 40 hours per week may be offered. Full-time employment may be offered as vacancies become available.

Challenge

A complaint-taker/dispatcher receives calls from the public and dispatches police to emergency and non-emergency requests for service in a fast-paced, high stress, team environment, working 10 or 12 hour shifts, on a 24/7 basis. Required to work weekends.
