New Directions in Description
Join us for the seventh session of the seminar series, New Directions in Description, to hear Cecil Somerton, from the Treasury Board Secretariat, and Lynn Herbert, Service Canada, speak on Metadata Management.

Cecil Somerton on theory: Departments involved in the Information Management Program Business Problem Assessment stated that “Data and metadata definitions are inconsistent across systems: Definitions in different systems for the same data or metadata item are not the same, affecting other IM or usage.” The presentation discusses solutions to the problem and identifies potential metadata management and services that promote information quality and reliability.
Lynn Herbert on practice: This presentation discusses issues and challenges in the practice of managing metadata. It will cover the evolving role of metadata in the publishing and administration of electronic content and why managing the metadata for long-term growth and usefulness is important. The practical aspects of metadata management will be described, ranging from developing and sustaining the framework, incorporating metadata elements and value sets into the technology, performing quality assurance and implementing change management processes. The session also covers the Government of Canada enterprise context for metadata building blocks, and discusses some of the challenges we face to ensure metadata continues to be used strategically within our departments.
The presentations will be in English, with simultaneous translation, and will last approximately an hour. Questions will be taken in both languages after the presentations. The talk will be of interest to those in the library, archival, and information management communities.
Biographical Notes:
Mr Somerton’s work with metadata began with the planning and implementation of the Canadian Coast Guard Intranet in 1995. Research during the project resulted in a metadata enabled content management system delivered through a successfully configured metadata search engine. In recent work with Health Canada he produced guidelines for metadata and controlled vocabulary development. Mr. Somerton currently provides research and consulting on metadata management and services as an Information Analyst - Metadata in support of the evolving Information Management Program to the Treasury Board Secretariat.
Lynn Herbert M.A, MLIS is currently Manager, Metadata Integrity Services in the Enterprise Information Management Directorate at Service Canada. She has 15 years of experience working for the federal government on a variety of online services and information management projects, both from the technical and management perspective. She has worked as a reference librarian at the National Library of Canada, during which time she also built the library's early Internet presence in 1994. From 2000-2004 she managed the project to procure and implement advanced search and enterprise content management tools for Social Development Canada and used the tools to build a metadata-driven web site. The project won a 2003 GTEC Gold Medal for Strategic Information Management. Lynn is currently serving as chair of the GOL Metadata Working Group's CMS Metadata Sub-Group.
