Many Lives, Many Stories: A Tribute to Asian-Canadian Women

Library and Archives Canada is proud to present this selection of photographs, which depicts a few of the many women of Asian descent who call Canada home. Women from three cultural communities Japanese Canadians, Indian Canadians and Chinese Canadians are represented. The images offer a glimpse into the varied experiences and rich contributions of Asian-Canadian women to Canada's cultural heritage and multicultural society.

This travelling exhibition presents visual works from Quebec with a focus on developments in Canadian history as they relate to conflict and commerce, the geography of the land and the nature of its inhabitants, and the evolution of Canadian society.

McClelland & Stewart Ltd., Canada's premier English publisher is currently celebrating its centenary. The company's contribution to Canadian society has been enormous and pervasive; it has also marketed and distributed thousands of other titles from foreign publishers. The story of McClelland & Stewart parallels the infancy, growth, and establishment of Canadian literature. Visitors will discover manuscripts, photos, books, and documentary art illustrating the history of the company and its impact on the development of Canadian literature.

Ottawa Valley Literary Awards

In celebration of literary excellence in our community, awards will be presented to the winners of various local literary contests. Awards include the Ottawa Book Award, the Ottawa Public Library Short Story Award, the Archibald Lampman Award for Poetry, the Duncan Campbell Scott Non-Fiction Prose Award, the Audrey Jessup Award for Best Crime Short Story, the Canadian Authors Association National Capital Writing Award, the Valley Writers' Guild Joker Is Wild Award, City of Ottawa 55 Plus Short Story Award and the Ottawa Independent Writers Award. In partnership with the Broken English Theatre Company, CBC Television, CBC Radio One and the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization, Library and Archives Canada is pleased to present the Broken English Writing Competition Awards as part of the celebration of Asian Heritage Month. New Canadians were invited by the Broken English Theatre Company to write about their experience in Canada (prose or poetry); the winners will be honoured at the evening's event. In English.

Adam Osinski Piano Recital

The Polish-Canadian Women's Federation in Ottawa hosts a piano recital by Adam Osinski. Well-known in the Toronto area, this young Polish-Canadian virtuoso has mesmerized audiences with his skill and interpretation of the most challenging classical compositions.

Obachan's Garden

Celebrating the many contributions of Canadian Asian women, the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada present the film Obachan's Garden (2001) by director Linda Ohama. This National Film Board documentary chronicles the life of the director's 103-year old grandmother, from her earlier years in Japan to her life in Canada, and is also a personal reflection of Japanese-Canadian history. The film, in English, will be followed by a guest speaker.

Chinese Restaurants, Three Continents

The Chinese Canadian National Council, Ottawa Chapter will screen the film Chinese Restaurants: Three Continents (2004) by Toronto filmmaker Cheuk Kwan, who will be present. This film continues his globe-spanning tour of Chinese restaurants with eye-opening stories from Madagascar, Norway and Canada (Outlook, Saskatchewan). In English.

Canadian Friends of Finland

Premiere showing of We Dare to Dream, the story of Finnish immigration to Canada, by Karvonen Films of Edmonton. The film is in English and this showing is a benefit to raise money for the film production itself. Admission for this one-hour film is $10. There will also be a silent auction and a reception following.
